Used when someone hears something questionable and calls the speaker out on it, often in a critical or accusatory way.
彼は私の言葉を聞きとがめて、「それ、どういう意味？」と聞いてきた。
He took issue with what I said and asked, "What do you mean by that?"
上司は部下の言い訳を聞きとがめて、厳しく注意した。
The boss found fault with the subordinate's excuse and reprimanded him sternly.
