noun
Hizen Province
Historical province in Japan, corresponding to parts of modern Saga and Nagasaki prefectures (excluding Tsushima and the Oki Islands). Used in historical contexts.
肥前は江戸時代に重要な陶磁器の産地だった。
Hizen was an important pottery-producing region in the Edo period.
The name 肥前 (Hizen) is derived from the ancient province of 肥国 (Hi no kuni), which was later split into 肥前 (Hizen, 'front Hi') and 肥後 (Higo, 'rear Hi'). The exact origin of 'Hi' is uncertain.
