Zen stick; warning stick; encouragement stick

A flat wooden stick used in Zen meditation to strike or alert a sitter who is drowsy or unfocused. Called けいさく in Rinzai Zen and きょうさく in Soto Zen. Abbreviation of 警覚策励.
