Linguistic term for the phenomenon where an unvoiced consonant becomes voiced when it is the initial consonant of the non-initial part of a compound or prefixed word in Japanese.
「はな(花)」と「ひ(火)」が合わさると「はなび(花火)」になるのは連濁の例です。
When はな (flower) and ひ (fire) combine to become はなび (fireworks), that is an example of rendaku.
連濁が起こる条件は複雑で、完全には解明されていません。
