flag outside an izakaya
Historical term for a flag or banner raised to indicate an izakaya (Japanese-style pub). Now mostly encountered in historical or literary contexts.
In Edo-period ukiyo-e, izakaya with a 酒旗 raised are often depicted.
Compound of 酒 (sake, alcohol) and 旗 (flag, banner). The reading さかばた uses the older kun'yomi さか for 酒 and the kun'yomi はた for 旗, with rendaku voicing.
