Literary or slightly old-fashioned intransitive verb for moving quickly on foot or hurrying somewhere. In modern casual speech, 走る or 急ぐ are more common.
彼は戦場を馳せた。
He ran across the battlefield.
知らせを聞いて、彼は家路を
Hearing the news, he hurried home.

Transitive use for driving a vehicle or riding a horse at speed. Often appears in literary or historical contexts; for modern driving, 飛ばす is more natural.
彼は馬を馳せて戦場に向かった。
He rode his horse swiftly toward the battlefield.
スポーツカーを馳せる快感は格別だ。
The thrill of driving a sports car fast is something special.

Used almost exclusively in the fixed expression 名を馳せる (to make a name for oneself, to become famous). The verb itself is not freely combined with other objects for this meaning.
