In Japanese mythology, a female demon or hag that inhabits Yomi (the land of the dead). Appears in the Kojiki myth of Izanagi's escape from the underworld.
イザナギは黄泉の国から逃げるとき、ヨモツシコメに追われた。
When Izanagi fled from the land of Yomi, he was pursued by the Yomotsu-shikome.
ヨモツシコメは古事記に登場する恐ろしい鬼女である。
The Yomotsu-shikome are fearsome demonesses that appear in the Kojiki.
From Old Japanese 黄泉つ醜女 (yomo tu sikome), literally 'ugly woman of Yomi'. The exact derivation of シコメ is uncertain, but it is associated with 醜 (shiko, 'ugly') and 女 (me, 'woman').
