expression
my condolences; I am sorry for your loss
A very formal and polite expression of sympathy used at funerals or when hearing of someone's death. Often used in set phrases; the shorter ご愁傷様です is also common.
この度はご愁傷様でございます。
Please accept my deepest condolences on your recent loss.
お母様がお亡くなりになったと伺い、ご愁傷様でございます。
I heard that your mother passed away; my heartfelt condolences.
Another very formal condolence expression, often used in written messages or speeches. ご愁傷様でございます is slightly more personal and direct.
A slightly less formal version of the same phrase, still polite but more common in everyday condolence situations.
A polite phrase combining ご (honorific prefix), 愁傷 (grief, sorrow), 様 (honorific suffix), and でございます (very polite copula). The expression literally means 'it is a matter of grief' and is used exclusively for condolences.
