Expresses volitional attempt or effort to perform an action. Often used when the outcome is uncertain or when describing an action that is about to happen.

• 彼かれは新あたらしい言げん語ごを学まなぼうとしている。

  He is trying to learn a new language.

• 電でん車しゃに乗のろうとしたが、ドアが閉しまってしまった。

  I tried to get on the train, but the doors closed.
