Used to strongly negate a preceding statement and introduce a more extreme or opposite situation. Often follows a negative clause.
He did not get angry. On the contrary, he was laughing.
The rain did not stop. On the contrary, it got even stronger.
Usage patterns
- 〈事〉ない。それどころか、〈事〉。not only not X, but in fact Y (something even more extreme)
He didn't apologize. On the contrary, he got angry instead.
- 〈形容詞〉くない。それどころか、〈形容詞〉。not even X; if anything, it's even more Y
This movie isn't interesting. If anything, it's boring.
- それどころか、〈事〉さえ〜on top of that, even X (an extreme example)
He's so busy he can't even rest. In fact, sometimes he can't even eat.
