pothole (geology); giant's kettle
Geological term for a cylindrical hole formed in bedrock by water erosion, often in rivers. Also called 甌穴 (おうけつ).

Many large potholes can be seen in the upper reaches of this river.
Commonly used for holes in road surfaces. In everyday Japanese, 穴ぼこ (あなぼこ) is also used.
