Ikkō-ikki uprising
Historical term for armed uprisings by followers of Jōdo Shinshū (True Pure Land) Buddhism, mainly during the Muromachi and Warring States periods.
The Ikkō-ikki held great power during the Warring States period.
Ishiyama Hongan-ji was a stronghold of the Ikkō-ikki.
From 一向 (Ikkō, referring to the Ikkō sect of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism) and 一揆 (ikki, uprising or league).
