Archaic Zen Buddhist term for a formal exchange between practitioners to test each other's level of enlightenment. Not used in modern everyday language.

In Zen practice, practitioners would ascertain each other's depth of enlightenment through dialoging.
A Zen Buddhist expression meaning one probing exchange after another: 挨 and 拶 originally conveyed pressing or challenging, and came to denote a teacher’s testing of a disciple’s understanding.
