Technical term in gagaku (court music) referring collectively to the three drum types: kakko, taiko, and shōko. Rare outside specialized contexts.
In gagaku, three types of drums called sanko are used.
third division of the night (approx. 11pm to 1am)
Archaic timekeeping term; the night was divided into five watches, and sanko was the third, corresponding roughly to 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Not used in modern Japanese.
In old timekeeping, sanko referred to the third watch of the night.
