Historical Japanese military rank roughly equivalent to these modern ranks in various English-speaking forces. Used in the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy; not used in the modern Japan Self-Defense Forces.

• 彼かれは終しゅう戦せん時じには上じょう等とう兵へいだった。

  He was a private first class at the end of the war.

• 上じょう等とう兵へいとして入にゅう営えいした。

  He enlisted as a private first class.
