drop curtain
A curtain that is lowered from above, used in traditional Japanese theater such as kabuki.
歌舞伎では、場面転換のときに下げ幕が下りる。
In kabuki, the drop curtain comes down during scene changes.
Compound of 下げ (sage, 'lowering') + 幕 (maku, 'curtain'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term is conventionally associated with traditional theater.
