Ryōchiku; the two former provinces of Chikuzen and Chikugo
Historical term referring collectively to the old provinces of Chikuzen and Chikugo in northern Kyūshū. Used mainly in historical or geographical contexts.
The Ryōchiku region was once called Chikuzen Province and Chikugo Province.
Compound of 両 (ryō, 'both') and 筑 (chiku), an abbreviation referring to the two old provinces Chikuzen and Chikugo. The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term is conventionally associated with this region.
