The Nakasendō is one of the five major highways developed during the Edo period.
Old townscapes still remain in the post towns along the Nakasendō.
Kanji 道 road-way, street, district Don't confuse with 東海道 is the Edo-period highway that ran along the Pacific coast between Edo and Kyoto, while 中山道 was the parallel inland route through the mountains, so learners often mix up which road took which path.
