Historical military rank used in the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, roughly equivalent to a brigadier general in the army or a commodore in the navy. Not used in modern Self-Defense Forces.

• 彼かれの曽そう祖そ父ふは陸りく軍ぐんの代だい将しょうだった。

  His great-grandfather was a brigadier general in the army.

• 代だい将しょうは艦かん隊たいの指し揮きを執とった。

  The commodore took command of the fleet.
