Rare and old-fashioned or specialized compared with the speech sense. In ordinary modern Japanese, 代理で支払う, 立て替える, or 弁済する is usually clearer.

In this old document, 代弁 refers to paying money on someone else's behalf.

A rare broader sense of doing or carrying out something for another person. For normal modern use, 代理する or 代行する is usually the natural choice.
