Technical and environmental term for refrigerants and propellants designed to replace ozone-depleting CFCs. Often used in discussions of climate policy and air conditioning.

Compound of 代替 (substitute) and フロン (from 'fluorocarbon'). The term emerged in the late 20th century as alternatives to ozone-depleting CFCs were developed.
