Historical term for a fashionably dressed, modern young woman, especially in the Taishō to early Shōwa period. Similar in spirit to the Western 'flapper' but rooted in Japanese culture.
In the Taishō era, stylish young women called date-onna walked the streets of Ginza.
From 伊達 (date, 'stylishness, dandyism') + 女 (onna, 'woman'). The exact origin of 伊達 is uncertain, but it is often associated with the flamboyant style of Date Masamune, a famous daimyo.
