tsukuri-e; painting technique with opaque color overpainting
A traditional Japanese painting technique, especially associated with Heian-period emakimono, where initial ink outlines are covered with opaque mineral pigments and then redrawn.
The tsukuri-e technique is used in the Genji Monogatari Emaki.
In tsukuri-e, one first draws the outlines, then applies opaque pigments over them.
