Archaic second-person pronoun used in the secret language of court ladies. Not used in modern Japanese.

"Where are you going?" said the court lady.
A court-ladies’ euphemism formed from the initial そ of そなた plus 文字 (“letter, written character”). Such expressions replace part of a word with 文字 and were characteristic of 女房詞.
