branch castle; outlying fortification
Historical term for a satellite castle or fort built away from the main castle, often for defense or to control territory.
During the Warring States period, many branch castles were built to protect the main castle.
Compound of 出 (de, 'out') and 城 (shiro, 'castle'), literally 'out-castle'. The reading でじろ is a standard rendaku form.
