A sharp, authoritative telling-off, often in a disciplinary or corrective context. Can be used as a noun or with する.

• 上じょう司しは遅ち刻こくした社しゃ員いんを叱しっ咤たした。

  The boss scolded the employee who was late.

• 彼かれの叱しっ咤たはいつも厳きびしいが、愛あい情じょうがこもっている。

  His reprimands are always strict, but they come from a place of care.

Used especially in the compound 叱咤激励 (しったげきれい), meaning to encourage someone strongly, often with a stern or urgent tone. Rarely used alone in this sense.

  On its own, 叱咤 leans toward scolding; the encouraging sense is mostly found in the four-character compound 叱咤激励.
