A yojijukugo encapsulating the four core principles of the Japanese tea ceremony (sadō): wa (harmony), kei (respect), sei (purity), and jaku (tranquility). Often cited as a guiding philosophy rather than a common everyday word.
The spirit of the tea ceremony is expressed in the phrase 'wa-kei-sei-jaku'.
Sen no Rikyū made wa-kei-sei-jaku the guiding principle of chanoyu.
