Historical term for a governor appointed to a province under the ritsuryō legal system of ancient Japan.

Historical term for a daimyo whose domain encompassed one or more provinces; compare with 国主 (sense 2).

In the Edo period, daimyo called 国守 sometimes ruled over multiple provinces.
