Describes a high level of skill or competence in a particular area. Often used as a な-adjective. Note: the reading たんのう is more common for this meaning, but かんのう is also used.

Original Buddhist meaning, now rare. Refers to the ability to endure hardship or remain patient. In modern contexts, the reading たんのう is more common for this sense as well.

  In Buddhism, patience is considered one of the important virtues.
