summer retreat (Buddhist)
Buddhist term for the traditional summer retreat during which monks remain in one place to focus on study and practice. Not used in everyday conversation.
During the summer retreat, the monks devote themselves to practice without leaving the temple.
From 夏 (summer) + 安居 (Buddhist retreat). The term is a direct borrowing from Chinese Buddhist vocabulary.
