Mahayana; the Great Vehicle
Buddhist term referring to the major tradition of Buddhism that emphasizes universal salvation. Often contrasted with 小乗 (Hinayana).

Used on street signs and in traffic regulations to indicate lanes or areas for large vehicles such as buses and trucks. Not a general term for large cars.

From Sanskrit Mahāyāna, literally 'Great Vehicle'. The kanji 大 (great) and 乗 (vehicle) directly translate the concept.
