Demoiselle cranes sometimes stray into Japan during migration.
Kanji spelling exists but is rarely used; the bird name is normally written in kana.
The Japanese name アネハヅル (姉羽鶴) literally means 'older sister wing crane', but the exact origin of the name is uncertain.
