Archaic term for a woman who is charming in a coquettish or flirtatious way. Not used in modern Japanese outside of historical or literary contexts.
In Edo-period ukiyo-e, courtesans described as 婀娜者 were sometimes depicted.
From 婀娜 (ada, 'coquettish, charming') + 者 (mono, 'person'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain; the spelling uses rare kanji for their phonetic and semantic values.
