Historical term for a noble or official serving at the imperial court, especially in pre-modern Japan. Not used for modern government officials.
Heian-period courtiers were expected to be cultured enough to compose waka poetry.
Compound of 宮 (miya, 'imperial palace') and 人 (hito, 'person'), with rendaku voicing of 人 to びと. The reading みやびと is the standard kun'yomi combination.
