Historical term for a senior household servant in a noble or wealthy family, similar to a steward or butler. Not used for modern domestic staff.
In the Edo period, daimyo households had servants called 家従.
Compound of 家 (house) and 従 (follow, serve). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the kanji suggest a servant who follows or attends to the household.
