congratulate; wish well
Archaic godan verb; in modern Japanese, 祝う (いわう) is the standard word for congratulating. 寿く appears mainly in classical literature or fixed expressions.
古歌に「君が代を寿く」とある。
In an old poem, there is the phrase 'to wish long life to the sovereign'.
「寿く」は現代ではほとんど使われず、代わりに「祝う」が用いられる。
'寿く' is hardly used today; instead, '祝う' is used.
A variant of ことほぐ, historically written 言祝ぐ or 寿ぐ, meaning to celebrate or confer good wishes through words.
