Historical term for money given by a man to a woman at betrothal, often for an obi sash. Compare 御袴料 (おんはかまりょう), money for a hakama. Rare in modern usage.

In the Edo period, there was a custom of giving betrothal money (on-obi-ryō) at the engagement ceremony.
Compound of 御 (honorific prefix) + 帯 (obi sash) + 料 (fee, money). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but it refers to money given for the purchase of an obi as part of betrothal gifts.
