Archaic term for a sum of money given by a woman to a man upon engagement, as recorded in historical sources. Compare 御帯料 (おんおびりょう), a similar betrothal gift. Not used in modern Japanese.

Compound of 御 (honorific prefix), 袴 (hakama, traditional trousers), and 料 (fee, expense). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but it refers to money for hakama as part of engagement customs.
