Rare honorific Shinto term for rice offered to a god. Not used for ordinary meals.
神社では、神前に御飯をお供えする。
At the shrine, they offer steamed rice (on'ii) before the deity.
We offered rice to the god before starting the meal.
Use 膳 for 御飯 when it's offered as a food offering (お供え物).
The reading おんいい is an honorific form of いい (rice) with the prefix 御 (おん). The exact historical derivation is uncertain; the term is now rare and limited to Shinto contexts.
