museum (esp. with collections of old objects)
Often used in proper names of museums that focus on historical artifacts and antiquities. The term itself is not a generic word for 'museum' in modern Japanese; 博物館 is the common equivalent.
At the Chōkokan museum in Saga Prefecture, valuable old documents are on display.
Formed from 徴古, “investigating or collecting evidence of antiquity,” and 館, “hall” or “institution.”
