pre-noun adjectival
Pre-noun adjectival (rentaishi) that attaches directly to a noun. Expresses a strong sense of personal or in-group possession, often with emotional weight. Can be used for 'my', 'our', or 'one's own' depending on context.
我が家は駅から歩いて5分です。
My/our house is a five-minute walk from the station.
彼は我が子のように生徒を大切にしている。
He cherishes his students as if they were his own children.
Archaic kanji variant; rarely used in modern Japanese.
From Old Japanese 我 (wa, 'I, me') + possessive particle が (ga). The form 我が is a fossilized possessive construction that now functions as a single pre-noun adjectival.
