Describes a state of mental confusion or disorientation when faced with an unexpected situation, unclear instructions, or something unfamiliar. Often used with する to mean 'to be bewildered' or 'to be at a loss'.

• 突とつ然ぜんの質しつ問もんに戸と惑まどいを隠かくせなかった。

  I couldn't hide my confusion at the sudden question.

• 新あたらしいシステムに社しゃ員いんの戸と惑まどいが広ひろがっている。

  Confusion is spreading among employees over the new system.

Archaic senses. Sense 2 refers to the confusion felt when waking up in the dark and not recognizing one's surroundings. Sense 3 refers to the momentary confusion of forgetting which house or room one intended to enter. These are not used in modern Japanese outside of historical or literary contexts.

• 古こ典てん文ぶん学がくでは、夜よ中なかに目め覚ざめたときの戸と惑まどいが描えがかれることがある。

  In classical literature, the disorientation upon waking at night is sometimes depicted.
