Archaic term for a public bathhouse during the Edo period. Not used in modern Japanese.
In the Edo period, public baths called todanaburo were popular among commoners.
Compound of 戸棚 (todana, 'cupboard') and 風呂 (furo, 'bath'), possibly referring to the small, cupboard-like structure of early public baths. The exact origin is uncertain.
