A sum of money paid by a tenant to a landlord at the start of a lease, held as security against damage or unpaid rent. Part of it may be returned when the tenant moves out, minus deductions for repairs. Common in Japanese rental contracts.
When renting an apartment, you have to pay a security deposit.

Usage patterns
