A somewhat literary or old-fashioned word for a place to stay during a journey. In modern Japanese, 宿, 旅館, or ホテル are much more common.

• 彼かれは旅りょ次じで一いち夜やを過すごした。

  He spent a night at a lodging on his journey.

• 古ふるい紀き行こう文ぶんには「旅りょ次じ」という表ひょう現げんがよく出でてくる。

  In old travel writings, the expression 旅次 often appears.
