hatago (Edo-period inn for travelers)
Historical term for a type of inn that provided lodging and meals to travelers during the Edo period. Often associated with post stations along major highways.

旅籠 originally denoted a travel basket used to carry provisions, especially fodder for a horse. Its meaning expanded to provisions and lodging supplied to travelers, and then to an inn; 屋 denotes the establishment.
