A conical mass of refined sugar, historically common before granulated and cube sugars became widespread. Now mostly encountered in historical or traditional contexts.
In the past, sugar was sold in the form of sugarloaves.
Compound of 棒 (ぼう, 'stick, rod') and 砂糖 (さとう, 'sugar'), referring to the conical shape of a sugarloaf. The reading ぼうざとう follows rendaku voicing of さとう.
