A respectful, somewhat formal term for one's own father, used especially in samurai or historical contexts. In modern Japanese, it sounds old-fashioned or literary; お父さん is the usual everyday term.

• 父ちち上うえは今いま、書しょ斎さいにおられます。

  Father is in his study now.

• 時じ代だい劇げきでは、武ぶ士しの子こが「父ちち上うえ」と呼よぶ場ば面めんがよくある。

  In period dramas, there are often scenes where a samurai's child calls their father 'chichiue'.
