also: こくり
noun
kokkuri; table-turning; planchette divination
A Japanese divination game similar to Western table-turning or Ouija, where participants place their hands on a coin or object that moves to answer questions. Often called こっくりさん when personified.
放課後、友達とこっくりをやってみた。
After school, I tried kokkuri with my friends.
こっくりさんは、学校の怪談の定番だ。
Kokkuri-san is a staple of school ghost stories.
Variant without gemination; less common than こっくり.
The origin is uncertain. The name may be onomatopoeic from the nodding motion of the coin (こっくり), or a contraction of 狐・狗・狸 (fox, dog, raccoon dog), animals associated with trickery in folklore. The ateji spelling 狐狗狸 reflects this folk association.
