Ryukyu Kingdom
Historical term for the kingdom that ruled the Ryukyu Islands from the 15th to 19th century, before becoming Okinawa Prefecture.
The Ryukyu Kingdom traded with China and Japan.
From 琉球 (Ryukyu, the island chain) + 国 (country, kingdom). The name 琉球 itself is of uncertain origin, possibly from Chinese records.
